Old-Fashioned Cherry Cheesecake: A Sweet Slice of Sunday Tradition

Some recipes aren’t just desserts—they’re memories.

This Old-Fashioned Cherry Cheesecake is one of those special dishes that instantly takes me back to Sunday afternoons, gathered around the table, waiting for that first slice. It’s light, creamy, and topped with a bright, glossy cherry layer that feels both comforting and just a little bit celebratory.

What makes this recipe even more meaningful is that I first wrote it down when I was just 9 years old, standing in the kitchen with my grandmother as she made it. My notes were… let’s just say less than precise. But over time, I’ve pieced it together, and now it’s a treasured recipe I come back to again and again.

And if there’s one secret to its signature texture? It’s the Dream Whip. While some modern versions swap in shortcuts, this recipe stays true to the old-fashioned method—and it’s absolutely worth it.

Ingredients

Crust

  • 2 cups cinnamon sugar graham cracker crumbs (about 15 sheets)

  • ½ cup butter, melted

  • If using regular graham crackers, add 3 tablespoons powdered sugar

Filling

  • 2 envelopes Dream Whip, prepared according to package directions

  • 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, room temperature

  • ¼ cup powdered sugar

  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

  • 1 package plain gelatin

  • 1 can cherry pie filling

How to Make It

  1. Prepare the crust:

Place the graham crackers in a zip-top bag and crush them with a rolling pin until fine crumbs form.

  2. Mix and bake:

Combine the crumbs with melted butter (and powdered sugar if needed), then press firmly into the bottom of a 9.5 x 7.5-inch glass dish.

Bake at 350°F for 10 minutes, then set aside to cool completely.

  3. Make the Dream Whip:

Prepare according to package directions, using an electric mixer until stiff peaks form. This step is key to that light, airy texture.

  4. Prepare the filling base:

In a separate bowl, beat together the cream cheese, powdered sugar, lemon juice, and plain gelatin until smooth and well combined.

  5. Bring it together:

Gently fold the Dream Whip into the cream cheese mixture until fully incorporated and fluffy.

  6. Assemble:

Spread the filling evenly over the cooled crust, then top with cherry pie filling.

  7. Chill:

Refrigerate for 3–4 hours, or until set.

Tips for the Perfect Old-Fashioned Cheesecake

  • Room temperature cream cheese matters for a smooth, lump-free filling

  • Fold gently to keep the mixture light and airy

  • Don’t rush the chill time—this is what helps everything set beautifully

Why This Recipe Still Stands Out

There’s something special about recipes that don’t try to be trendy. This cheesecake doesn’t rely on complicated techniques or hard-to-find ingredients. Instead, it leans into simple steps and classic flavors—and delivers every single time.

The Dream Whip gives it a texture that’s lighter than traditional baked cheesecake, almost cloud-like, while the cherry topping adds just the right amount of sweetness and nostalgia.

A Dessert Worth Passing Down

Recipes like this are meant to be shared—written down (even imperfectly), made often, and passed along to the next generation.

Whether you’re making this for a Sunday dinner, a holiday gathering, or just because you’re craving something comforting, I hope it becomes as meaningful in your kitchen as it has been in mine.
