Welcome to Second Sunday: A Tradition Reimagined

If the last few years have taught me anything, it’s that time has a way of slipping by—quietly, quickly, and without apology. After the COVID pandemic, I realized that our family, like so many others, was struggling to find moments to gather, to slow down, and to truly connect. Our daughters were grown, our schedules were full, and despite the best intentions, weeks could pass before we found ourselves around the same table.

So I decided to do what my great-grandmother and grandmother did so beautifully: make gathering a priority by giving it a place on the calendar.

That’s how Second Sunday was born.

Growing up, Sundays were special in our family—not just in the spiritual sense, but in the way they brought people together. My father has told me stories about my great-grandmother’s after-chuch gatherings. She had a large family, but always hoped for even more on Sundays. She would be disappointed if the preacher didn't stop by for a bite to eat.

My grandmother carried on that tradition, and now I’m choosing to carry it forward too—this time with our adult children, their friends, and whoever happens to pull up a chair. Once a month, on the second Sunday, we gather. Sometimes the group is big, sometimes small. Sometimes the menu is planned days in advance, and sometimes it’s a bit of beautiful chaos. But it always, always fills me with the same feeling I grew up with: gratitude for the people around my table.

Second Sunday isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence. It's about the women who came before me while building new memories with the people I love most. It's about food, yes—but more importantly, it’s about connection.

Here on Food Fairy Prep, the Second Sunday section is where I’ll share the recipes, menus, stories, and little moments that make these gatherings so meaningful. My hope is that it inspires you to create your own traditions—simple, imperfect, joyful ways to bring your people together.

Because when we put it on the calendar, we give it room to happen. And when it happens, it nourishes far more than just our plates.

Welcome to Second Sunday. I’m so glad you’re here.
