If you've ever wished you could eat your favorite Italian sub with a fork, this recipe is for you. Inspired by the wildly popular Grinder Sandwich, this pasta salad delivers all the flavors of a loaded deli sub—salami, pepperoni, mozzarella, tangy pickles, banana peppers, and a creamy herb dressing—in one satisfying bowl.
The name "grinder" has been around for decades, long before it became a social media sensation. Originally used throughout New England as another name for an Italian submarine sandwich, the term is believed to have come from the hearty, crusty rolls that required plenty of "grinding" or chewing. In 2022, the Grinder Sandwich became one of TikTok's biggest food trends thanks to its creamy chopped salad topping. Before long, creative home cooks transformed those same bold Italian deli flavors into pasta salad, creating a recipe that's every bit as satisfying as the original sandwich—and perhaps even easier to serve to a crowd.
Today, Grinder Pasta Salad has become a favorite for summer gatherings because it's colorful, easy to make ahead, and even better after the flavors have had time to mingle in the refrigerator. Whether you're serving it as a hearty side dish or a complete meal, this recipe brings all the delicious flavors of an Italian deli sandwich to the table—no bread required.

Ingredients
½ LBS Rotini Pasta
½ cup red onion
8 oz cherry tomatoes, halved
2 dill pickles, diced
4 oz. deli sliced pepperoni, diced
4 oz. deli sliced salami, diced
¾ cup banana pepper rings, diced
1 package of mozzarella ball pearls
Dressing
¾ cup mayonnaise
2 TBS red wine vinegar
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried basil
Splash of banana pepper ring juice
Fresh cracked pepper

Directions
Prepare pasta according to package directions. Drain pasta and allow to cool.
Mix together all dressing ingredients. Set aside.
Chop red onion, cherry tomatoes, dill pickles, pepperoni, salami, and banana pepper rings. Add to a large mixing bowl.
Add mozzarella balls and cooled pasta to bowl.
Add dressing and mix well.
Refrigerate until ready to serve.
Food Fairy Tip: For the full grinder sandwich experience, stir in 1–2 cups of chopped romaine or iceberg lettuce just before serving. Be sure to wash your lettuce thoroughly! The crisp lettuce adds the fresh crunch that made the original Grinder Sandwich famous while keeping the pasta salad from becoming watery.
